“I told you, you need to train more.”

Qav ignored Syla. The comment was undoubtedly the beginning of an oncoming lecture. Maybe she would keep it to herself if he didn’t acknowledge it.

“You were right about her,” Rem observed, falling into step beside him. “She is incredibly strong, given what we know from Ennis’s research on the history of your gifts.”

Syla snorted. “Even without the power, she could have kicked his ass. She’s had training. Honestly, it’s embarrassing more than anything else.”

Shut your mouth before I shut it for you. Qav sliced his eyes to her in warning.

“I’d like to see you try. You’re barely on your feet now after all of that.”

Qav bit the inside of his cheek, his strides lengthening. “She may be blocked from using her telepathy, but her mind is still a fortress. Just trying to breech her consciousness while she’s awake is . . . difficult.” That was an understatement. Qav struggled to even read her thoughts when her shields were up.

He had met only two other So’ in his life, both underwhelming. Avery made them look like children in comparison.

And to think, she had been raised her entire life as a human. It was baffling.

He had been honing his skills since he discovered them. He was only five when he first compelled his mother to buy him red sugar candies at the markets. To this day, it was still his favorite. He kept jars of it around the house, a wrapped piece always in his pocket.

Avery had no idea the extent of her power, how rare she was. That old woman in their memories—Leviathan—had certainly done her best to keep that a secret. And she had done a number on Avery.

Not to mention the kid. Tai.

It was no wonder Qav was exhausted. Syla was right about that. He was about to collapse on his feet after untangling the mess inside that boy’s head. If they had an entire planet full of people that had been corrupted to that level . . . Avery had no chance in the galaxy at fixing them all.

What had Leviathan used to poison so many minds from such a distance? Qav would pay a high price indeed to gain that knowledge. It would be invaluable. His plans for his empire depended on continued control of the Reanges left. It was already difficult enough to keep them happy, even when he provided everything they could need.

Echo. He hated the very word. The way it bounced around his own head, a mockery of double meaning. There was nothing for them there. It was their past. His own parents had been obsessed with returning. They still were. If it hadn’t been for Qav and his ambition, his willingness to adapt and carve out a place for them here, then they’d still be living in the gutters. Begging for blazing scraps.

“What did Avery agree to?” Rem asked, his voice cautious. “Cora has been inquiring about our delivery. Pretty insistently, I might add.”

“Cora can wait,” Qav replied sharply.
